remember: dias de destruccion fest starts this thursday!

hey guys, just a reminder that the dias de destruccion fest kicks off in just a couple of days! it's all going to be great, but a couple things of note:

thursday: get to beerland early - the altars play first and are debuting their new lineup (v3.0).

friday: xyx unfortunately won't be playing, but they've been replaced by the newly revived kegcharge. they're a spectacle in and of themselves and it's probably worth coming out just for the texas james mayhem that will surely go down.

saturday: the brat!

tickets for the beerland show aren't available in advance, but you can (and should) get tickets for the emo's shows.

we love robert collins

gentleman, scholar, and all around stand-up dude robert collins has an incredible blog up with rips of notable tapes that he's collected. the tapes run the gamut: from the 80s on, mixtapes, demos, noise, hardcore, etc etc. it's a pretty impressive collection with classic collins writeups for each entry.

oh man, this is so cool. check it out: terminal escape

get into the reverb with surfer blood at beerland

hot off their appearances at CMJ and resulting new york times feature, surfer blood will be stopping by beerland wednesday night. as hyped as they may be at the moment, it's well deserved - they're a hardworking group and you can't deny that the music is great. they describe themselves as "anthemic, bombastic, life-affirming indie pop," and while i don't know if "bombastic" is necessarily the word i'd choose, "hook-laden," "catchy as hell," and "lovely and occasionally triumphant melodies" hit a little closer to the mark. it should be a good one.

it's also max from beerland's birthday, which is a good excuse in its own right to come out. buy the man a beer!

11/4: Wednesday at Beerland (21+)
Surfer Blood
Cowabunga Babes
Shitty Beach Boys (not just a clever name?)
The Zoltars

on 30th/august, right after paintbox/world burns to death/blowback tour

he felt in heavy sickness. and still in unconscious critical condition.

he's been had major liver problem for long time, his liver has malignant
virus in it,
on this last tour, he was over tired, exhausted & stressed out. and finally
his body/health situation turned to very weak condition. then... suddenly,

internal organs stop working & lots of poison in blood running through all
over his body, he was almost dead that time.

amubulance car took him to hospital & he went to intensive care unit
straight.
doctor said seiichi already escaped most danger. but still, totally no
talk, no action, he's still in 100% unconcious conditions on the bed.

this medical treatment he gets are already costs him & his family huge
amount of money.and doctor said that, even if he gets any better, but he
must cure his liver super carefully, this means he must stay in hospital
until new year.... or same liver problem will attack him very soon....

and no one can be sure about that when seichi can be back on his job. even
if he could get out of hospital....

we his friends really wish that he'll recover good soon... anyway, most
serious problem right now is that
he & his family facing serious financial difficulties. already this
situation costs huge & same high costs continues untill he get out of
hospital, and can't know when he can start working...

bill daniel, texas punk photography legend, has a new site...

if you've ever seen a collection of photographs of texas punk bands from the early 80s, chances are you've seen bill daniel's work. from 1980 through 1984, he photographed every local and touring punk band he could see... to the tune of about 12,000 photos. in addition to punk shows, his portfolio contains shots of the skating and graffiti worlds and the abandoned rust belt casualty of braddock, pennsylvania.

original multiples gallery has been working with bill to make prints of his photographs available. and not just available - available affordably. original multiples is supporting his new site, www.tri-x-noise.com. check it if you have a chance. all prints are 8x10", $25, and hand printed from film. they are all signed, but not numbered. this is a great chance to get a hold of some texas punk history and support texas art!

gun outfit and some of texas's finest at beerland next week

8/6: Thursday at Beerland (21+)
gun outfit
deskonocidos
ghost knife
teenage cool kids

now this is a show! here we have four viciously catchy bands, but all varied enough that you won't get bored. teenage cool kids (who we've talked up on this blog before) are coming down from denton with jangly built to spill style pop and hopefully copies of their new lp, "foreign lands." between ghost knife and deskonocidos, we have members of practically every worthwhile functional punk band in austin and songs guaranteed to get stuck in your head for days. stopping in from olympia, gun outfit are constantly compared to dinosaur jr and the meat puppets, which i suppose is fair given that they're angular and driven and catchy all at the same time. it's familiar without being derivative and really just pretty fucking solid. if you haven't heard their lp, "dim light," yet, it would probably be worth stopping by the show just to pick it up.

and if all that doesn't sell you, beerland is very well air-conditioned. and they have cold beer. lots of it.

ultimate metal night

7/6: Monday at Emo's (outside) (all ages) ($20 advance)
Pentagram (only Texas reunion show)
Outlaw Order
Wolves in the Throne Room
Nachtmystium
The Roller
( buy tickets )

jesus fucking christ, where do i even start with this one? heavy heavy heavy dirty fucked up sludgy dirty metal. METAL.

i'd be surprised if this didn't sell out - buy your ticket in advance!

7/7: Tuesday at Emo's (all ages) (inside) ($8)
abe vigoda
talbot tagora
loser life

this should be a fun one. although abe vigoda is often lumped in with no age, given their shared hometown (los angeles) and similar art/pop/punk vibe, they're definitely their own beast. they'll be bringing their own brand of fuzzed out, noisy, dancy punk. i really don't know much about talbot tagora aside from the fact that they have a cover of elastica's "connection" up on their myspace. if they play it live it could be worth the price of admission alone. loser life are more straight ahead punk than the other bands. let's put it this way: less L.A., more bakersfield.

and now for something somewhat different: deer tick at emo's

7/9: Thursday at Emo's (all ages) (inside) ($10)
deer tick
dawes
shed alfred
( buy tickets )

after monday's pentagram show you may need to change gears a little bit. if so, stop by emo's for a night of alt-country/indie/blues featuring deer tick, dawes, and shed alfred.

austin punk map

my buddy bryan (who is not even an austinite... yet!) sat down and plotted lots of punk-friendly spots around austin on a google map. he's got venues, record stores, restaurants, bars, etc. eventually it looks like it will have a calendar of punk events in austin, too. this will be especially useful for out of towners, especially those with fancy phones. very cool!

czech it out

black twilight tour: black metal up your ass

7/3: Red 7 (all ages)
bone awl
volahn

also at emo's on the 20th

tomorrow: go see some fucking art

good buddy and poster artist extraordinaire jack barfield is having a posters & photos show at the hyde park parlor opening tomorrow. jack's been making posters for punk gigs for years now, and if you live in austin you've seen dozens of them and probably even own one or two. he's pretty handy around a camera, too! i'm not sure what he's got in store for the show, but it will be good. it's free at the hyde park parlor and will be up all week... stop by, have a beer and a slice of vegan pizza.

the parlor - hyde park
4301B guadalupe

if that wasn't enough barfield for you, jack and dominique are having the punkest wedding reception all week at the mohawk.

printable chaos in tejas schedule

many thanks to jack for putting this together. it's a printable pdf listing of all the shows (and art shows) happening this weekend complete with addresses and set times. print it out, put it in your chaos pouch, and take it with you for the fest.

[ download ]
( apologies for the mediafire link, i have no other way of hosting files. if this won't work and you'd like it emailed to you, let me know at blasphamy [at] gmail[dot]com )

and because i'm feeling charitable, here's a map with all the show locations on it. do note that the bridge show is not listed because the cops are not invited. ask around, you'll figure it out.

not chaos in tejas related, but still of interest

if you're downtown friday night and need a little break from all the punk, stop by red 7 for some metal.

5/22: Friday at Red 7 (all ages) ($8)
Bible of the Devil (Chicago)
Zoroaster (Atlanta)
Mouth of the Architect (Dayton)
White Rhino
Small Stone.
$8

if you didn't buy a cock sparrer ticket before they sold out, consider it a kind of consolation prize. you're welcome.

chaos in tejas kickoff party!

Wednesday at Red 7 (all ages) (outside) ($8 for 21+, $10 for minors)
CHAOS IN TEJAS KICKOFF WITH...

Ponytail - 12:45
Harlem - 12:00
Teenage Cool Kids - 11:15
Yellow Fever - 10:30
(buy tickets)

"Baltimore group Ponytail won its crowd by sheer virtue of joyously splattered madness. Its 2008 release Ice Cream Spiritual flings singer Molly Siegel’s yowls and barks against her band’s fractured but accessibly perky scribblings and squawks for a wiry, jerky art-rock sound that follows artists like Marnie Stern and Deerhoof into the realm of spastic virtuosity. The band’s albums are unhinged, to be sure, but the live show goes wilder. The media have praised the infectious exuberance of the band’s live shows, in which the members of Ponytail display their penchant for screaming non-sequiturs, dancing spastically, and—if the audience is lucky—tossing candy out into the crowd."
- The Onion

it's going to be a great show all around (i'm especially excited to see teenage cool kids again) and will kick off five days of punk and debauchery. let's get this mother started!

tonight!

MOHAWK - 9pm, outside stage, all ages
GHOST
LICHENS (featuring rob lowe from 90 day men)

"Since 1984, Japanese psych-rock band Ghost has been crafting a lush, multicolored sound that goes heavy on the martial percussion and theremin while still finding its center around troupe-leader Masaki Batoh’s acoustic guitar and mastery of a mind-boggling number of traditional Japanese instruments. Ghost is the sort of mythologized band that releases material two or three times, and it reportedly spent time living in both abandoned Buddhist temples and abandoned Tokyo subway stations. Fittingly, its music synthesizes the pastoral and modern, drawing equally from the hypnotic mechanics of Krautrock and the spacey organics of ’60s West Coast psychedelia. Lichens is the solo project of 90 Day Men’s Rob Lowe, who builds eerie, meditative drones from finger-picked guitar and wordless howls."
- The Onion
